Full Moon Lunar Eclipse in Capricorn

A powerful eclipse season draws to a close this weekend with the partial lunar eclipse that occurs over this full moon in Capricorn. There are real opportunities here to bring about change, to make a definite move in a direction that our soul has been calling for. It will be a test of our commitment though, and we should pay attention to the undercurrents in our communications, connect with our feeling, and make sure that we are not misreading the signs.

This full moon (exact at 5.44am, UK time, Sunday 5th July) falls on the Cancer-Capricorn axis where alignment, integrity and accountability are key. With the Moon in Saturn’s sign, we are reminded of the consequences of our actions, and that we should be acting in accordance with our commitment and purpose. Full Moon energy confronts us with the inner conflict and tension in the psyche, to address and find balance in the polarity between opposing forces, and this tends to be intensified over a lunar eclipse.

With the Sun in Cancer, we feel the tug of the soul, the call home, the need to protect what is sacred, to care for our family, and to have our innermost emotional needs nurtured and nourished. With the moon in Capricorn, by contrast, there is an equally strong need to step up and take control, to take responsibility in the situations with which we are faced. Capricorn takes care of the structure, but is remote from feeling, and is thus not a comfortable sign for the moon. It prioritises practical, longer term goals over the tidal ebb and flow of lunar, emotional experience.

We may need to make a more authentic alignment between our homing instinct and our vocational calling, one that honours both the deep roots of who we are, and the mission with which we are charged. The energy of this full moon holds us fast to our commitment. While it may feel like our freedom to do whatever we like is being impinged upon, it can help us to stay on track and focus more on what it is really important and do what is necessary. Whatever was seeded in us at the solar eclipse over the Cancer new moon two weeks ago now calls us to account, to make manifest the deep longings of our soul.

This full moon aligns by oppositional aspect with retrograding Mercury in Cancer. We need to read between the lines at a time like this, and should not expect communication to be straightfoward or rational. So even while ‘doing what must be done’, we should also leave space for compassionate exchanges and soulful conversations, where we hold each other tenderly and listen deeply to each others’ needs.

With the Moon also in trine aspect to Uranus, there is a real opening for change, things we might have thought impossible until very recently could come to pass both personally and in our communities and in society as a whole. There is such a radical paradigm shift happening this year, and we need to keep our wits about us in order to keep up! This full moon releases another wave of progressive energy that can shift the conversation if we allow it, even in the midst of the conservative forces intent on preventing it. Many blessings of this full moon to everyone.

  1. I study astrology at https://horo.io/ and I think that the lunar eclipse falling on the birthday of the USA seems to indicate dark times, however this reading shows that the American experiment could have a rebirth. Americans might decide to become a family again, to ignore that which divided us, and to work toward a more inclusive future. I will be rooting for that.
