Full Moon in Gemini

Dear Friends

We have an unusually elevated, supercharged super full moon in Gemini today, Thursday 4th December (11.13pm, UK time). The Moon will make its monthly opposition to the Sun (in Sagittarius), at the nodal bendings, exactly square to its own nodal axis (forming a 90˚ angle to the north & south node). The moon is ‘out of bounds’, and so really doing her own thing - she will experience her most extreme latitude above the ecliptic, rising much higher in the sky than most full moons. This is also a so-called ‘supermoon’, being at its closest approach to the earth, making it appear slightly larger and brighter than usual.

A Gemini full moon has a restless, inquisitive quality to it. While Gemini is light, playful and curious, this full moon occurs in a Sagittarian season when our we are taking aim, and our vision is determinedly trained on the path ahead. In Sagittarius, we are seeking the way, following the star, looking for the truth that lies beyond the horizon. So there is a tension here that can test our faith and persuade us to re-consider our assumptions. This can be very helpful as it connects with diferent discourses, but it can also feel like a distraction if we are focussed on a particular aim.

This full moon feels very charged with energy and it could carry a lot of karmic significance. Being square its own nodal axis creates a tension between the path of our soul’s evolutionary development and a past situation (either in this life, or a past life) that has not been dealt with and must be faced before we can move forward. Is there something from your past that you need to heal or reconcile before you can take the next step?

Let’s explore the tensions and creative opportunities that present themselves here over this full moon. As I mentioned above, we have the Sun in far-seeing, far-reaching, big-picture oriented Sagittarius, and the Moon in buzzy, quick-witted, and easily distracted Gemini. The Sagittarian quest for what is ethically right and true, is met by the many viewpoints from which truth may be regarded and the many stories that can be spun around it. For Gemini, there is always another way of looking at things. The Sagittarian says: “Trust me, I know what’s true, I know what I’m doing, and it’s for the good”, whereas Gemini’s questioning response is “how do I know if I can I trust you? Where’s the evidence? And what if there’s more than one truth?”

The Sagittarian part in each of us wants to keep the faith, look beyond the current situation, and trust that better days are ahead, while the Gemini part needs exchange and conversation, to gather in the facts. The key here is the establishment of a proper perspective, for both of these signs can misjudge the size of things. Sagittarius can over-reach, or overestimate what is possible, and also underestimate the impact that clumsy or mis-informed actions can have on others; Gemini can become overwhelmed with data and fail to see the wood for the trees. An open dialogue is crucial here, where both the intuitive and the inquisitive approaches are admitted; one that allows that Geminian talent for information gathering to support and benefit from the directional thrust, energy and conviction that Sagittarius is famous for.

Aspects in the Full Moon Chart

The Sun and Moon occupy 13 degrees of their respective signs at the time of the full moon, so if you have planets or angles (AC, MC, IC or DC) around this degree of the mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius or Pisces) then these tensions and opportunities could be especially poignant for you. The only aspects made directly to the Sun and Moon are the squares to the moon’s nodes, exact at 13˚ of Pisces / Virgo. As mentioned above, this can makes us take a step back, and look at things that remain unresolved in our lives. In evolutionary astrology, this is called the ‘skipped step’, something which must be addressed from our karmic past before we can proceed.

When it is ‘at the bendings’ (square the nodes) The moon has around 5 degrees latitude above the ecliptic (the Sun’s path), and as Gemini occupies the most northerly part of the ecliptic, this places the moon at just about its most extreme possible latitude. The moon is about the way we feel, and how we get our needs met, so our feelings and moods could be heightened. It also signifies the needs and moods of the people, as distinct from the sun which represents the ruling authority. So being ‘out of bounds’, the Moon is unwilling to conform, or stay with regulatory boundaries. So it will be interesting to see how things unfold politically during this moon cycle.

Gemini’s ruling planet, Mercury, is in Scorpio and has just turned direct a few days ago (after a period of being retreograde), so things can start making a bit more sense now! It is making an applying trine aspect to Jupiter in Cancer and Saturn in Pisces, forming a grand trine in the water element. There is a depth of feeling here, and an opportunity to process emotion in a healthy way. It is a good moment to be honest in the way we share our feelings. This is well supported here under this configuration.

The Gemini Mantra

Gemini is all about how we connect through ideas and language, and how we channel that effectively. It reminds us that we need to remain open and flexible as new information emerges. But at the same time, we need to tend to the communication channel itself, and not let ourselves get ovewhelmed by the endless amounts of data available, which can be spun this way and that to prove or disprove just about anything. We need to be able to see the wood for the trees, and this is where the balancing tension with Sagittarius is so necessary so that we can chart a course toward a meaningful truth.

My Gemini mantra runs like this: “I am a messenger of Light, a conduit for the voice of my spirit twin to be heard.

Full Moon blessings!
