Full Moon Lunar Eclipse in Pisces
Dear Friends
We have a total lunar eclipse, a ‘blood moon’, this Sunday 7th September over the Full Moon in Pisces. It occurs at 7.13pm on Sunday (UK Time) and in the UK, we will be able to see the tail end of this dramatic scene at moonrise, which is around 7.30pm. The moon will rise in the east just as the Sun is setting in the west, so sunset is the time to try and witness this rare and beautiful phenomenon.
Our senses are heightened during a lunar eclipse, and deeper aspects of our intuition can be be awakened, as we sense the presence of the divine closer at hand. We must trust our bodies more than our minds, allow ourselves to be moved by a deeper truth that is seeking to penetrate our awareness and break us open to what is most sacred about our existence. The themes of this eclipse hark back to 17th September 2024, the last time we had a lunar eclipse in Pisces and will continue to unfold through to the next eclipse season in the spring of 2027. With this particular eclipse being poised so close to the north node of the moon in Pisces (the nodes mark the places where eclipses happen), there is an especially strong sense of spiritual hunger and longing for forgiveneness and redemption at this time. The eclipse occurs at 15˚ Pisces, so we might expect anyone with personal planets, ascendant or significant angles around 15˚ of the mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius or Pisces) to feel this more intensely.
Things also have a habit of coming to a head over a lunar eclipse. Unresolved conflicts and tensions that have been brewing for while can reach a breaking point where we may feel that they just have to be expressed. The instinctual power of the moon is strong during a lunar eclipse, which can make us more emotionally reactive, and unconscious forces can easily get a grip on us during such a time if we allow them to. For this reason, it is advisable to adopt a contemplative attitude, take an extra breath when strong feelings arise, look within for the source of the conflict, and practice holding that tension rather than acting it out. As Carl Jung said: “When an inner situation is not made conscious, it happens outside as fate. That is to say: when the individual remains undivided and does not become conscious of his inner opposite, the world must perforce act out the conflict and be torn into opposing halves.”
The Full Moon Stretch
This full moon accentuates the inevitable tension between the close control of Virgo who stitches together life's tapestry with discernment and precision, and the shape-shifting ambiguity of Pisces, who longs for escape, oneness, an encounter with sublime beauty, and the release from suffering. With Pisces there is something to grieve, whether the unmourned passing of a loved one, the end of a relationship, or the loss of soulful connection with the world. We need something greater to devote ourselves to, and we long to believe there is a way of out of the tight web of control we feel locked within.
However, if we don't employ Virgoan vigilance, mindfulness, rigour in research, careful discrimination in the way we source information, then we are vulnerable to deception, and liable to become overwhelmingly confused by what's going on. We always need to make the right adjustment in Virgo, take time to diagnose the symptom, identify the appropriate medicine, make the right offering at the right time. We need the right conditions for the otherworldy seeing of Pisces to become possible. Like carefully measuring out the right dosage of a remedy, or preparing the ground and making the appropriate offerings ahead of ceremony, Virgo can provide the ritual requirement necessary for the magic to happen. It can become the sacred container for the Piscean experience to reveal the hidden depths of a situation, and for the truth of the soul to be known.
Moon Trine Jupiter in the Eclipse Chart
The chart for the lunar eclipse actually shows the Moon is in a separating opposition to Mercury in Virgo and an applying trine to Jupiter in Cancer. This suggests that there is a move away from the anxious preoccupation with detail and micro-management and toward greater faith and trust. With the Piscean Moon in a trine aspect to Jupiter, we benefit from taking a broader perspective, learning to surrender to that which is beyond our control, and recognising the deeper movements of the soul that are at play. It may be that we can find solace and drop deeper into compassion for ourselves and others through some form of cathartic emotional release at this time, or through accessing a more sublime state of being through a transcendent spiritual practice. It is significant too that Saturn has just dropped back into Pisces, in its retrograde phase, reminding us that we must look again to the ways in which we are entangled one with another, and dig deeper still into the well of compassion before we can stake any claim of individual identity (the task to which Saturn in Aries puts us).
Pisces, as the two fish tied together by a silver thread of longing, reflects the struggle of the soul for redemption, for salvation, for re-union with the divine, that deep remembering that we are connected. My Pisces mantra runs:
"I am not separate. I am one with all beings."
Full moon eclipse blessings to all.
