Full Moon Lunar Eclipse in Pisces

Dear Friends

This eclipse season culminates over this full moon in Pisces, with a partial lunar eclipse culimating at at 5.12am tomorrow morning, 28th August, and there is a radical planetary alignment to accompany it, as the Full Moon opposes Mercury (which is conjunct the Virgo Sun) and makes a tight square aspect to Uranus in Gemini. This gives a flavour of rebellion, revolutionary ideas, speaking out, and overthrowing the status quo.

The Themes of the Full Moon Lunar Eclipse

This is a ‘deep’ lunar eclipse, which has 96% totality, so it carries a lot of potency and will be quite dramatic visually, as the shadow of the Earth is cast across the Moon giving the moon a dramatic, reddish hue. This phenomena will begin around 2.30am UK time and culiminate at 5.12am. A lunar eclipse is powerful than a typical full moon, imprinting itself more deeply on the psyche, and its energy reverberates for longer than, at least until the next eclipse cycle which is in six months time.

This particular full moon accentuates the inevitable tension between the ritualistic control of Virgo who stitches together life’s tapestry, micro-managing the details of life with discernment and precision, and the shape-shifting ambiguity of Pisces, who longs for escape, redemption, sublime beauty, and the release from suffering. With Pisces there is something to grieve, whether the unmourned passing of a loved one, the end of a relationship, or the loss of soulful connection with the world. We need something greater to devote ourselves to, and we long to believe there is a way of out of the tight web of control we feel locked within. We need the right conditions, though, for that otherworldy seeing of Pisces to become available to us, and Virgo can, provide the ritual requirement necessary for the magic to happen. It can become the sacred container for the Piscean experience to reveal the hidden depths of a situation, and for the truth of the soul to be known.

A Rebellious Moon! - The Lunar Eclipse Chart & Its Aspects:

Here we see the chart for today’s eclipse, with the Sun making an almost exact conjunction to Mercury in Virgo, with the Moon opposed it in Pisces, and the planet Uranus making the t-square from Gemini. This configuration really packs a punch, and we might expect to see an acceleration of the spirit of revolutionary change, both in the world and in our own personal lives. Situations that have become intolerable might come to a head, with unexpected, even shocking developments; diplomacy could break down, a fragile peace agreement might break under this astrological energy. Personal relationships might have to become a more radically honest encounter, particularly where two people have been over-compromising or putting up with a situation to avoid facing the truth of it.

Those of us who have their Sun, Moon, personal planets (Mercury, Venus or Mars) or angles (AC/DC or MC/IC) in the early degrees of the mutable signs (Virgo, Pisces, Gemini & Sagittarius) will tend to be most affected by the unpredictability of this full moon energy, particular those who have 4 - 6 degrees of those signs.

We also see in this chart that Mars and Saturn are shaping up for a square aspect, Mars being in Cancer, and Saturn in Aries. Mars is protective and defensive in Cancer, and leads with a shield, rather than a sword, having a more passive-aggressive tendency, while Saturn is a self-reliant authority that can be have a quite embattled ‘me against the world’ quality to it. It is a tense aspect configuration where conflict tends to build within the system, or within the psyche, rather than have an obvious outward release. There is more caution around expressing anger, but it can be held within which can create a lot of frustration. And it is really very different to the Uranus aspect that dominates the full-moon chart. This Mars-Saturn aspect becomes exact on 1st September, but its presence in today’s eclipse chart gives it extra potency as a theme that will characterise this next astrological cycle. It seems to have a lot to do with diplomacy and how to manage strongly held convictions and strong emotions.

The Pisces Mantra

Pisces, as the two fish tied together by a silver thread of longing, reflects the struggle of the soul for redemption, for salvation, for re-union with the divine, that deep remembering that we are connected. My Pisces mantra runs:

“I am not separate. I am one with all beings.”

Blessings for this full moon eclipse!

All the best

John
