Scorpio Full Moon Today
Dear Friends
We have a Scorpio full moon today, 12th May at 5.55pm (UK time), with the Sun and Moon entering into their monthly opposition at 22˚ degrees of Taurus and Scorpio respectively. Scorpio is not a restful place for the moon, it is far from being at home here, and with Uranus in an applying opposition (4˚ orb), conjunct the Sun in Taurus, we can feel more than usually unsettled emotionally, but at the same we are likely to feel an urgency to break certain ties and interrupt unhealthy patterns that are no longer in alignment for us. Coupled with this, we may find ourselves restlessly longing for something different, with the moon inconjunct Jupiter in Gemini; our imagination sparked, we are inspired by new possibilities, but may be uncertain exactly which way to go, with the inconjunct being an aspect that is more difficult to settle into.
Upcoming Offerings…
Before I expand on this full moon some more, I would like to mention a couple of upcoming offerings. I have just released details of my next Foundaton Course in Astrological Studies. This is a comprehensive online training (accredited by the Association of Professional Astrologers International - APAI), which covers all major aspects of birth chart interpretation, with a focus on personal development, healing and soul-making. It begins on 14th October, with weekly classes running over three 9-week terms through to mid-June 2026.
Also a reminder that I am leading my annual Glastonbury Zodiac Milky Way Pilgrimage this September. This unique pilgrimage, originally inspired by Anthony Thorley & Celia Gunn 25 years ago, carries the same astrological theme as the El Camino pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, in that we are following the Via Lactea as it crosses the ecliptic path of the landscape zodiac of Avalon, Katherine Maltwood’s Temple of the Stars. The pilgrimage involves two days of walking (around 12 miles per day), and we will have a 2-night camp set up at Avalon Permaculture Gardens in Butleigh.
Typical Themes of a Scorpio Full Moon
A full moon brings important issues to awareness by exposing the tension of opposite forces. Being in the Taurus season, we are in a seasonal growth cycle, wherein the anabolic, up-building forces draw us out of ourselves and into a more potent expression of our energy, as sunlight increases and life flourishes. With the Moon opposed the Sun, though, we are met by the catabolic forces of Scorpio, which break down the integral coherence of life energy. We are drawn into the darker places of the soul during a Scorpio full moon, to delve into what lies hidden. It is through Scorpio that the light of psychological insight grows and we penetrate beneath the surface of things. So the Taurus-Scorpio polarity is about the visible and the invisible, material gain and material loss, the tension between having and not having, the radiant splendour of nature meeting the inner light of the soul, where a deeper truth is revealed.
The Minotaur
The shadow aspects of a Scorpio full moon are covetousness and jealousy; the urge to want to hang on to what we have, met with an opposing and equally toxic urge to have what someone else has. The Taurus-Scorpio shadow takes us into the mythological realm of the minotaur, the half-man, half bull creature, born out of an unnatural lust that resulted from the failure to relinquish the stewardship of something precious and bountiful. We should tend to these urges with care and pay close attention to our possessive urges over this full moon and notice where the twin monsters of greed and envy collide.
The Themes of Today’s Chart
As mentioned above, the main aspects to the Full Moon itself are the opposition to Uranus in Taurus and the inconjunct to Jupiter in Gemini. This forms a challenging aspect pattern that exposes the restlessness in our soul, and it can sometimes draw us into making impulsive or, perhaps, long-overdue decisions. We may realise that we have been putting up with a situation, and suddenly it now dawns on us that it’s just not ok anymore and we have to make a change. We want something better for ourselves now, and we are more resolute in our pursuit of truth. A full moon that is charged with this type of energy will often bring things to a head, and get us to face that. It can also reflect a desire to penetrate more deeply into the core of our spiritual life and purpose.
There is a precise Mercury-Pluto aspect in today’s chart, with Mercury in Taurus making an exact square to Pluto (Scorpio’s modern ruling planet) in Aquarius. This is truly an investigator’s aspect - there is a sense of compulsion to get beneath the surface of things and, even if that means uncovering some dark and uncomfortable truths, the square aspect gives that urgency and desire to confront them at a moment like this.
Full Moon Medicine
The healing medicine of Taurus is a rite of gratitude; to be thankful for what we have while we have it, accepting the grace with which it has been given, and to offer that up in thanks, recognising that we are only its steward and not its keeper. This opens us to the counter medicine of Scorpio which is to turn toward the shadow, look into the dark mirror of the soul, embrace death as a gateway within a greater cycle of life, and allow its transforming power to digest what is no longer vital and alive.
My Scorpio mantra runs: “I face my own shadow, and in so doing, I realise the deepest aspect of my soul.”
Full moon blessings to all.
John
