Full Moon in Cancer

Dear Friends

We have a full moon tomorrow, in the sensitive, deep feeling water sign of Cancer, the sign ruled by the Moon. It is the first of the 13 full moons that we will experience this year, and it is timed at 10.04am UK time, with the moon making an almost exact opposition aspect to Venus & Mars, which are both conjunct the Sun in Capricorn.

The turning of this new year, the entry into 2026, feels especially poignant and I anticipate this being a year where we will are likely to see momentous changes in our world, accompanied by profound inner transformation of perception and perspective. So this first full moon of the year represents an opportunity to really feel into what is alive in present in our hearts, and to connect deeply with the roots of who we are and where we come from. And also, being in Capricorn season, to assess the extent to which we are aligned to our purpose, our destiny, our calling.

With the Moon in Cancer opposed to the Sun in Capricorn, this full moon accentuates the tension between our need for solace and sanctuary, connection and inner reflection, against the desire to structure and plan what is to come in the year ahead, make resolutions, and focus attention on what needs to be done.

The Main Aspects in the Full Moon Chart

The stand-out aspect in the full moon chart is the opposition to the Sun-Venus-Mars conjunction in Capricorn. Both Venus and Mars are ‘combust’, alchemically fused, and passionately engulfed within the rays of the Sun, hidden from view. One way of contemplating this is to imagine that these two planets are journeying through the underworld together, conducting their erotic union in the liminal space between night and day, their energies channelled toward deep inner sexual union; introspective, purifying, highly charged with transformational potency. With the Moon opposing them, we can feel into that passion that dwells deep within the soul, and allow it to awaken the memory of an originating eros that lies at the heart of our creative potential.

The Moon is also applying to a conjunction with Jupiter, which will be a beautiful and auspicious sight to witness in the night sky tonight and tomorrow. A Moon-Jupiter conjunction in Cancer has an especially benevolent feeling about it, with the Moon in dignity and Jupiter in exaltation in this sign.

Attending to the Soul

A Cancer full moon draws our attention toward the care of the soul, to how we respect and nurture our deepest places of connection, the most private parts of ourselves. It is important at this time to tend to our inner sanctum, to the cave of the heart. We are likely to be more in touch with that need for connection, and the presence of the past is especially strong. There is a need to remember what has gone before, to honour the ancestors and recognise the ways in which our life is also a continuation of their story and how our experience as a soul is characterised by the powerful images that the family system has impressed upon it.

We honour the moon by recognising the cyclical nature of life, the returns, and the returnings; by protecting what is most precious, and remaining mindful of, and compassionate towards our complex and often contradictory needs. We would do well to call upon the soul-nurturing wisdom of maternal elders whose connection with the deep roots of life help nurture a sense of belonging, and remind of us what really matters.

Questions to Ask Ourselves Over the Full Moon
During the Capricorn new year season, it is natural to think about the longer term intentions and goals, our vocational aspirations, projects and plans. And this is the challenge of the Cancer full moon, to check in deeply within ourselves that our ambitions do not go against what really matters to us. It is worth asking asking yourself: “who and what do I care most about?”, “what touches me in the deepest of my being?”, “what aspect of my being needs nurturing right now, with care and compassion?”

How connected are you right now to your family and loved ones, or to that quiet place of sanctuary within yourself? It may be that you have been too busy protecting or defending your opinions, your reputation, or your standing in the world? You may have been justifying certain actions or behaviours by saying ‘well, the ends justify the means’, whilst at the same time betraying what matters most to you.

The Cancerian Mantra

My Cancerian mantra runs like this: “I am connected to the deepest source of my being, and I remember my origins.”

Full Moon blessings and I wish you a peaceful, joyful and inspirational 2026!
