New Moon in Libra
Dear Friends
We have a new moon today in the sign of Libra (exact at 1.25pm, UK time). The Sun and Moon make their monthly conjunction in the sign of the balancing scales, right at the end of the Libra season, and this is an opportune moment to seed our intentions for peace, harmony and right relationship. This is where we seek to become lighter, more aware of others and consider our inevitable relatedness. We are in hall of Ma’at here, she who maintains a spirit of truth, fairness and justice, and whose feather is weighed in the scales against the heart.
The Libran practice is one of balance, poise and equanimity, of suspending judgment, of walking a middle path. This requires us to recognise the limitations of our own perspective with its inevitable biases, to question our assumptions, and to consider the opposite view. Can we stand in the shoes of another, and attempt to appreciate the world through their eyes? We can be very quick to judge those whose views are different to our own, especially with the world being as confusing as it right now, with so many issues dividing us. The instinct is to want to take sides, to assert the rightness of a particular position, but Libra teaches us that in order for there to be peace, we must hold the tension of the opposing poles. This is not about passively sitting on the fence, conceding our position or opting for a premature compromise. This is about actively rising to meet the challenge of what opposes us, experiencing the discomfort of the tension and holding that as best we can.
There are quite a few challenging aspects to today’s new moon, which I will discuss below.
Aspects in the New Moon Chart
The Sun and Moon make their conjunction at 28˚ Libra, very close to the end of the sign, with the Sun due to enter the next sign, Scorpio in two days time. So this new moon will be particularly poignant for anyone with Sun, Moon, ascendant or personal planets in the late degrees of Libra, or indeed any of the other cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Capricorn). It also places the Sun and Moon into some quite challenging aspects to the outer planets. For a start, they form a wide grand cross alignment with Jupiter, Chiron and Pluto. Jupiter (in Cancer) and Chiron (in Aries) are currently exactly square each other, which can bring up a wound around faith and keeping things in perspective; when we feel as though we are not believed, we can get carried away in trying to convince others of what we see. In doing so, we can miss the mark or lose our sense of the bigger picture. We can see from the chart that the Sun and Moon receive a square aspect from Jupiter and opposition from Chiron, so this new moon could reflect some of those themes. The healing here comes through trusting our intuition, remembering to breathe, to listen, to pay attention to the deeper balance within ourselves.
The Sun and Moon are also making an applying square aspect to Pluto, which can bring with it an uncomfortable intensity, a need to address the shadow dimension, to face the darkness, to face the truth of our soul’s deep process of transformation; a reminder that Scorpio season is just around the corner! There is also a significant inconjunct aspect to Saturn and Neptune, which really stretches us beyond our comfort zone, and makes us face up to the uncertainty and confusion around us. This can manifest as an uneasy feeling, hard to pin down. It challenges us to look at our fear of the unknown, to dwell in the mystery of life, to be with the experience of not knowing. It can be seen as port of yod with Uranus also making an inconjunct to the new moon - again, unsettling, but also rich with the possibility of breakthrough insights, if we can trust the deep process that is unfolding here.
It also worthy of note that there is a Mercury-Mars conjunction in Scorpio in today’s chart, so our communications could be more than usually deep and intense. Our conversations are likely to be rich and profound, but there may be a sharpness to them too, which we should tend with care, and not be too quick to react.
The Libra New Moon Mantra
My Libra mantra goes like this:
“I come in peace, I walk in beauty, and I choose the middle path”
New moon blessings to all!
John
